Fashion Crimes Pt.2

Notwithstanding my earlier criticism of cyclists wearing long socks, a ghastly trend which owes much to Lance Armstrong and his Texan ways, I had to admire the stylishness of this woman at the Hell of The Ashdown yesterday.

The issue of socks rumbles on. I wonder if those horizontal strips are actually Scotchbrite reflective strips - that would be pretty cool.

Lance's sock crimes weren't just wearing long socks, but black ones. At the time he claimed that he had "run out of white ones" - like a multiple TdF winner runs out of anything. He comes from a land were businessmen still wear tassled loafers.

Disturbingly Rapha have started offering black socks - I had to return the ones that arrived with my latest Rouleur subscription. See, even they can't give them away.

The basic principles always apply, but I think you have to cut women riders a bit of slack in the cycling fashion stakes.

What would look positively offensive on male riders can look quirky and cool.

I'm even prepared to turn a blind-eye to the miniskirt and leggings look favoured by female bike messengers.

Above all, any woman prepared to go out and ride 100km of steep hills in January has earned the right to wear what she wants on the bike.

But black socks are still wrong.
